Why is India One Nation?
India is a land of diversity. The country has several cultures and traditions and boasts of hundreds of languages spoken by more than a billion people as well. The country is rich and affluent in its culture and historical heritage. India has a diversity that cannot be compared to any other country of the world. One can experience its diversity only by visiting the country and taking to its streets to see the real diversity and colours. The country is known for its diversity in race, region, caste, language, mate, landform, flora and fauna and so on. From the very past till date, India has repaintained its diversity and has shaped its presence. This land of diversity has rightly been termed as “the epitome of the world.”
Apart from its cultural, traditional, religion, language and food diversity, India is celebrated as one nation. The country has been termed as one nation since more than 12000 years in history. The belief in spirituality among the different sect of people is one of the main binding force here that united the people in one string. India was not a nation as we know and see it today. Before the British rule in India, hundreds of kings from different places ruled it. The British slowly captured the political control of most of them and made them united underneath their rule. They referred to it as India. When we got our independence in 1947, the British freed it as a new nation known as India.
India has been ruled by foreign rulers for hundreds of years. It had left a deep impression on the culture and society of the country. The country has been under the influence of both Islamic and the British rule for many years leaving a deep influenced on the culture of the nation. This is the reason why we can see and experience so much diversity in terms of culture and traditions of the country. India is one of the greatest and most influential countries in the world with its cultural diversity. Though in the past, India has been ruled by different rulers, its people has always stood united in its cause, be it during the revolutionary freedom struggle or facing off against the natural calamities. India has always been the epitome of the ideology of “Unity in Diversity”.
In Indian culture, God is not our goal. Our ultimate goal and highest value is liberation, freedom, mukti or moksha. But we must understand that being ruled by different rulers, people in India have been highly influenced by diverse culture and religion and thus have started worshipping God. Still, today, we believe in moksha and karma. We believe that karma is the driving force of our life, we reap what we sow and this belief in karma, and moksha has tied India as one nation.
With much variety in terms of the people, their life-styles and cultures, there will always be differences but differences can be seen everywhere, in a family, in a society, a community, you name it. But, this does not mean that people are not united in their cause. Today, India has 29 states, 7 union territories, 22 official and over 1800 unofficial languages and yet we take pride in ourselves as a democracy. Isn’t this explanation sufficient to believe that we are indeed one as a nation? We can witness the best of India when one turns to natural calamities be it earthquake, tsunami or flood that killed thousands in different places. It is during such forces of nature that India has come together as a nation to help and for the upliftment of the needy.
India houses the diversity throughout its length and breadth yet it enjoys the sense of oneness that can be rarely seen anywhere in the world.
