Story behind specs and goggles
The ever-changing dynamics of the society today has forced us to introspect which in turn has made us intensely inquisitive. To satisfy this curiosity, we turn to search engines for answers. The network that we have woven around us with the help of the internet has left us in a chaotic and volatile situation. The diversified thought process and the ability to come to uncommon conclusions by having different perspectives, have left the homogenized population in a lurch.
It amazes me how different eyes can narrate different stories of a same situation. It’s intriguing about how people have changed their tone from asking someone about their opinion to telling them about their perspective. Goggles there were meant for your protection, have now become a fashion tool, available in different sizes, shapes and colors. Every person has put on one, some of the shades are: humanity, intuition, creativity, credulity, cruelty, learning, dreamer, frugality, sincerity, judger, the list is never ending.
The Millennials and Gen Z have started using them as a coping and defense mechanism. The blind men and an elephant, the parable which talks about a group of blind men who encountered an elephant for the first time and conceptualized what it is, just by touching it is a story which is truer today than ever before. Here, every blind man felt a different part of the animal’s body and on the basis of their understanding their descriptions varied. They were in complete disagreement with each other. They even thought that some of them were being dishonest. None of them actually thought that they might be partially right or posse partial information.
The moral of the story is that we humans have the tendency to actively perceive what we want to and modify or ignore other people’s messages that conflict with our attitudes and beliefs. You can argue until you are blue in the face about whether the glass is half full or half empty but for some it is very simple; they are content that they have a glass.
In the same way people wearing different shades of goggles will judge a single woman working and living independently differently. Some will aspire to live that life while others categorize them and put them in different blocks which are convenient for them. People take it to a different level of absurdity by saying that they were abandoned by her parents, is spoiled brat who smokes and drinks, is into bad things, is lonely in life or will never become a good homemaker.
It is also very easy in today’s world to judge someone on the basis of their sexual preference and snap judgments. Homosexuality is frowned upon and such people usually live a lie because of the norms that our society adheres to. People think that attraction to the same sex is considered to be a sin and such people should not live.
There will times when you would think that ‘I’m right’ while in the person in front of you will think the same, just don’t throttle them. Buy some new shades and appreciate this truth that lies within each and every perspective in how much ever amount it does.
